Somm Journal is a private wine tasting journal and a beginner's course in tasting. You log what you drink, the app teaches you how to taste it, and over time it shows you what your own palate actually likes.
Somm Journal has no accounts, no sign-in, and no servers. Every entry, photo, and lesson you complete is stored on your device only. Nothing is uploaded, and the developer never sees your data. See the privacy policy.
How do I back up my journal?
Settings → Backup. The app writes a single file containing all your entries and progress, plus your photos, and hands it to iOS so you can save it to Files, iCloud Drive, or send it to yourself. Keep that file somewhere safe — because nothing is stored on a server, it is the only copy.
I got a new phone. How do I move my journal?
Make a backup on the old phone, install Somm Journal on the new one, then Settings → Restore and pick the backup file.
I deleted the app. Are my entries gone?
Yes, unless you made a backup first. Deleting an iOS app removes its local data. This is the trade-off of storing nothing on a server.
I paid for the Full Course but it's locked.
Settings → Restore Purchases. The unlock is a one-time purchase tied to your Apple Account, so it restores on any device signed in to that account. If it still doesn't unlock, email us with the date of purchase.
Is it a subscription?
No. Somm Journal is free to use as a journal, and the Full Course is a single one-time purchase. There is nothing recurring.
Why does the app say my acidity calls are off?
That's the calibration feature. It compares how you rated a wine's structure against the range that grape is typically known for. It isn't a grade — palates differ — but a consistent drift in one direction usually means it's worth re-running the kitchen exercise in Unit 0.
Does it scan wine labels?
No. Somm Journal is a journal and a course, not a label scanner or a shop. You enter wines yourself, which is part of how the learning works.
Why is it rated 17+?
The App Store applies that rating to apps that reference alcohol. Somm Journal contains no alcohol sales and no purchase links of any kind.
